Slithergrin

Giving stat blocks to nightmares is a major subtheme in our monsters, but the Slithergrin is by far the most literal example. Like a non-garbage modern Lovecraft, the Sewerman had a dream about this beastie before putting it to paper. The monster was made more to capture a vibe than fill a mechanical niche, but since the Sewerman is a professional vibe-catcher, the resulting monster still has a dangerous gameplan in spite of its origins in dream logic.

As a monster, the Slithergrin works best as an ambusher, using its ability to create muddy difficult terrain to disrupt and trap the players before scuttling down to shred them to bits. These more devious tactics could be a good way to introduce new players to some intelligent monster combat early on, if the Slithergrin gets to be your boss monster, or you could really cause some problems for a mid level party by sending a nest of these after them. It's a creature that offers ways to play tactically without adding too many features to juggle, great for when you're keeping things simple, or for when you want to brew up a massive strategic encounter without overloading your brain.
