Bloodsoaked Backbiter
Magic items can be a DM's most immediately effective tools for world building and including their players into their world. Some magic items have deep and complex histories; others have means of compelling players to act in ways befitting of the items. The Bloodsoaked Backbiter has both. By possessing such flavorful history, and having that history reflected in a curse, there is great opportunity for players to feel as though they are one with your setting once they pick up this fearsome weapon. We hope you enjoy!

Bloodsoaked Backbiter
Weapon (cursed item, greatsword), legendary (requires attunement)
This crystal blade constantly drips fiendish blood. It once belonged to a warrior that fell in a holy crusade against the Nine Hells. Time and again, it was bathed in blood and corrupted with the hatred of the evil beings that came to wield it. Over the ages, the blade has continuously changed hands in its service to the endless conflicts between fiends.
You have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic greatsword. In addition, attacks with this greatsword score a critical hit on a roll of 18, 19, or 20.
When you hit a fiend with this greatsword, the fiend takes an extra 4d6 slashing damage.
Curse. This greatsword is cursed. You become obsessed with battle against powerful opponents, especially fiends. You are unwilling to part with the greatsword and unwilling to flee from combat once it begins.
When you score a critical hit or slay a fiend, you take half as much slashing damage as you dealt to the target. This damage cannot be reduced in any way.
